Weekly Newsletter #14 - November 29, 2023
President's Corner

We hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend! Whether you celebrated Thanksgiving or enjoyed some relaxing time with loved ones, we hope it was filled with happiness and special moments. This time of year brings us closer, regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs. We're a community that treasures our differences, and that makes us stronger together!

At Alderwood, we're grateful for the unique traditions and diverse cultures that make us who we are. Every family brings something unique and beautiful to our community. Our differences make us richer and help us learn from one another.

We're excited to keep sharing fun and inclusive events that bring us all together. As we celebrate this special season, let's embrace each other's uniqueness and stand together in kindness and respect. We're all part of the Alderwood family, and we're so grateful for each and every one of you!

Join us for a special Meet the Board event on Wednesday, December 13th, at 8:00 a.m.! It's a fantastic opportunity to connect with the Alderwood PTA Board members and learn more about our school initiatives and events and how you can get involved.

We value your input and want to hear your thoughts and ideas. Your participation and engagement are essential to our school's success! See you there!

Let's team up and rock this fundraiser! Grab your Krispy Kreme Gift Card by pre-ordering now, and we'll be slinging dozens of glazed donuts on December 8th. Tournament of Champions

We are looking for volunteers to be part of the Nominating Committee for next year’s PTA Executive Board 2024-25.

The purpose of the Nominating Committee is to seek and identify qualified nominees for next year’s PTA Executive Board.  Each year, some Board members will term out of their positions (PTA bylaws allow volunteers to serve a maximum of 2 years in the same position) so the committee will help fill those.

Volunteers are needed to ensure nominees represent a diverse range of talents, perspectives and experiences.  Your role on Nominating Committee will include finding and interviewing potential candidates in January and February, and then recommending the new slate in March.

If you are interested in being a part of the Nominating Committee or if you have any questions, please email our Parliamentarian, Elizabeth Reilly, at parliamentarian@alderwoodpta.com

Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you to all the Alderwood families who shopped at the Fall 2023 Book Fair! We are happy to share that our profit resulted in $5612 for books, the library and classrooms. And 1514 books were sold and now in the hands of our Owl Stars! Special thanks to all who volunteered at the fair as well. Please save the dates for our Spring book fair: May 1-9, 2024. Happy reading!

Volunteer Spotlight - Book Fair

Charla Batey is a public relations professional who currently works in the tech and telecommunications industry. She holds an MBA in Marketing and is a proud UCI Alumna with a Bachelor of Arts in Literary Journalism. Immediately prior to her current role, she was the inaugural Communications and Events Officer for the UCI Libraries. This was a perfect role for her as she's an avid reader who often shares on her social media which books she is reading. Charla was also a Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce 40 Under 40 honoree in 2020 and the first Black president of the Orange County Chapter of Public Relations Society of America the same year.

She enjoys spending quality time with her six year old daughter, adores her neighbors who are her "village" and chosen family, being outside, reformer pilates, indoor cycling, traveling, reading, writing, and discovering new music.

Charla has been an Alderwood volunteer since her bonus son was in 3rd grade, and he is now a Sophomore at University High School. She's been a room parent, and jog-a-thon volunteer, and in 2021-22 took over chairing the book fair . She's beyond thankful to have fellow working mom Alice Chuang as a co-chair.

Growing up mostly in Denver, Colorado and Stevenson Ranch, California in tight-knit communities, Charla loves how Quail Hill embraces diversity and truly feels like a place where everyone can grow and thrive. She hopes to live here through her daugher finishing high school.
